Book Your ConsultationWhat Is Botox®?
Botox® is a minimally invasive injectable treatment that temporarily reduces the activity of targeted muscles. By blocking the nerve signals that trigger muscle contraction, Botox® helps smooth dynamic wrinkles and can enhance facial balance and definition.
Botox® contains botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This prevents targeted muscles from contracting normally. As muscle activity decreases, the skin above the treated muscle can appear smoother and existing expression lines may become less noticeable.
Botox® has been extensively studied and has FDA-approved uses for both cosmetic and medical applications.
Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers
Botox® and dermal fillers work in different ways:
Botox® temporarily reduces muscle activity to soften dynamic wrinkles and can be used for certain facial-contouring treatments.
Dermal fillers add volume and structure to areas such as the lips, cheeks, chin, jawline, and areas affected by volume loss. Depending on your goals, Botox® and dermal fillers may be used separately or as part of a customized treatment plan.
What Can Botox® Treat?
Forehead Lines — Softens horizontal lines caused by repeated eyebrow movement.
Frown Lines / “11s” — Reduces vertical lines between the eyebrows for a more relaxed appearance.
Crow’s Feet — Smooths fine lines around the outer corners of the eyes caused by smiling and squinting.
Bunny Lines — Softens wrinkles that appear along the sides of the nose with facial movement.
Gummy Smile — Can reduce excessive upward movement of the upper lip to minimize visible gum when smiling.
Lip Flip — Relaxes the upper-lip muscle, allowing the lip to gently roll outward for a subtle enhancement.
Downturned Mouth — Can reduce downward muscular pull at the corners of the mouth for a more lifted appearance.
Chin Dimpling — Softens a dimpled or “pebbled” appearance of the chin caused by muscle activity.
Masseter / Jawline Slimming — Reduces masseter muscle activity and size, which may create a slimmer, more contoured lower face.
Neck Bands — Relaxes prominent platysma bands to create a smoother-looking neck.
Jawline Definition — Selective treatment of the platysma may improve the appearance of the jawline and lower face.
Facial Asymmetry — Precise treatment may help improve certain muscle-related facial asymmetries.
Excessive Sweating — Temporarily reduces sweat production in treated areas, including the underarms.
Chronic Migraine — Botox® is FDA-approved for prevention of chronic migraine in appropriate patients.
Muscle Spasticity — May be used to reduce abnormal muscle activity associated with certain medical conditions.
What to Expect
Your treatment begins with a personalized consultation to evaluate your facial anatomy, muscle movement, and aesthetic goals. Your injector will determine the appropriate treatment areas and dosing.
Botox® injections are performed using a fine needle and typically take only a few minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. Most patients return to their normal daily activities shortly afterward.
When Will I See Results?
Planning Your Treatment
Botox® does not produce its full effect immediately. Muscle activity gradually decreases following treatment, with visible improvement developing over several days. Results are generally most apparent within approximately 1–2 weeks.
How Long Does Botox® Last?
Results are temporary and commonly last approximately 3–4 months, although longevity varies depending on the treatment area, dose, muscle activity, metabolism, and individual response. Regular treatments may be scheduled based on when muscle movement and the appearance of treated lines begin to return.
Is Botox® Safe?
Botox® has a long history of clinical use and is FDA-approved for multiple cosmetic and therapeutic indications. As with any medical treatment, Botox® can have potential risks and side effects.
Common temporary effects may include:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Headache
- Temporary weakness of nearby muscles
Rarely, unwanted effects such as eyelid or eyebrow drooping can occur. Your provider will review appropriate precautions, contraindications, and potential risks during your consultation.
